who needs a top level.

( she doesn't mean to get in the water. she doesn't really believe in the whole concept of a magical pool of water that grants wishes. she's still struggling to wrap her mind around the concept of a magical city that grants wishes in exchange for a few sessions of netflix and chill, so expanding that requirement on her suspension of disbelief that much more is a tall order right now.

no, caroline forbes mostly goes out into the woods at night to think, or to take advantage of the clear sky to stargaze for the first time since her childhood. while she's out there, she happens to stumble across the so-called wishing pool, and though the water itself holds no immediate appeal, there's the cool surface of the stone benches calling her name as a great โ€” and more importantly, flat โ€” place to lay down for a bit, a better angle for peering up at the night sky without getting a crick in her neck.

she doesn't mean to fall asleep out there, but the gentle music of crickets and winds in the trees is a much better soother than the white noise app on her cuddlephone, so it's not until a particularly thick clump of leaves falls on her mouth that caroline finally wakes up, spluttering and confused and feeling particularly gross. it's through the fog of sleep that she sets eyes on the water nearby, and it's her tired mind that decides said water will be useful for splashing on her face to clean off whatever forest detritus might still be clinging.

it's definitely not the aimless wandering of her thoughts that drags her to the water's edge. no, the thoughts of the people she's met here might run through her mind, but the subconscious desire to know where she stands in their minds remains entirely subconscious... but it still remains all the same, a wish that counts if only by technicality. i wish i knew what he was thinking, thought out as the water touched her skin, a young girl's desire to read the minds of her current crush. nothing more, nothing less, but the pool takes her seriously either way.

she doesn't realize anything's off until the next day, when her own wandering thoughts are interrupted by a voice that's decidedly not her own. a voice that's only in her own head, she realizes pretty quickly, and one she knows. derek's voice, thinking about things as inconsequential as water temperature and as ridiculous as vin diesel's physique. while it's odd, she has to wonder if maybe she's just sleep-deprived. maybe she's just... imagining him, thinking about these things. maybe her crush is stronger than she thinks it is.

until she hears him thinking about a baby. a baby that he, supposedly, has in his possession now, one whose existence seems tied in with someone else's. someone here, that she's met. and the name of a bar, one she's never been into, but it's somewhere to start. somewhere to figure out what's going on.

so it's with her trademark caroline forbes intensity that she storms across town, making her way through the double doors at criminales, looking very intensely for โ€” )
Derek Hale! ( yep, that's the one. )

Why didn't you tell me you had a kid?!

( speaking of... where is said kid? never mind, that doesn't matter. )
