[ Kara's taken the little boy for the night and admittedly, Derek kind of misses the little guy. He's long since accepted that children aren't in the cards for him, however much he might want them. Upon showing up in Cadelle, he started to wonder if maybe he can after all, just not any time soon. The process of having children would take years, if only because it would take Derek years to trust someone enough for that.
So maybe he's zoned out a little on his stool, watching the door and thinking about how he might make a decent dad if given the chance. The last thing he's expecting to interrupt him is an angry vampire, but she storms into the place and it jolts him out of his own head mid-thought, eyebrows lifted with surprise as he practically jumps to his feet. ]
I...what? I don't have a kid...what are you even talking about?
[ If he looks confused, it's because he is. Very confused. ]
You've been talking about a kid all day! ( which, admittedly, is only half-true. he'd been talking about the baby for a good few hours, but most of the day had been the sort of weird, inane thoughts that didn't connect very well. things like shirt colors and werewolf twins and what the color blue tasted like to people who were color blind. she hadn't been following along. ) Which, okay, isn't admittedly a total deal-breaker or anything, but I would have thought you'd tell somebody that, you know?
( he's looking at her like he doesn't know, though, which really isn't helping. )
I've been hearing you talk all day about him, and now he's not even here?
[ Derek's eyebrows lift higher still. He hasn't been talking about a kid, or Baby specifically, all day; especially not to Caroline, since this is the first time he's seen her all day. The confusion is more than clear on his face. ]
I what, now? Kara's got the kid...how did you...?
[ His voice trails off because how does he even begin to address that? ]
( to be totally honest, caroline wasn't sure she knew what she was talking about. hearing voices, even voices of people you knew were supernatural, wasn't a normal thing. it wasn't even a normal thing for caroline post-turning, when hanging out with witches and werewolves and other vampires meant weird things happened all the time. as far as she knew, even bonnie's gram wasn't capable of making people hear somebody else's voice from across town. )
So... you have a kid, then. ( because if kara had him, he had to exist. ) And I've been hearing you in my head all day, talking about him, which you don't understand... which probably means that you haven't been hanging out around me invisible all day, which is probably a good thing.
( because that would be extra weird. )
I think I can hear you talking. Or... well. ( she pauses for a moment, biting at her lower lip as she thinks back. ) Do you talk about Vin Diesel a lot, or were you just thinking about him?
[ Derek's expression remains confused as all hell because he still can't understand how Caroline knows about the baby Kara found and he blinks, because Caroline seems to think that the kid is Derek's. As appealing as the idea of actually coparenting a child with Kara might secretly be, that's not really what's going on here and he can't for the life of him figure out how she found out enough to get that confused. He hasn't seen her in a couple of days... ]
I...there's a kid, he's not my kid. Kara found him nearly drowning himself all alone and we've been taking turns taking care of him while the cops try to find his parents or whatever, I don't understand how you know that, though...
[ How can he have been talking in her head? How would that even work? ]
What do you mean you've been hearing me in your head all day? I...Vin Diesel, what?
[ Like he's going to own up to that one. Maybe in another lifetime. He's straight, but he's not blind; the guy has an envious build. He may or may not be what Derek has been striving for with his own body personally, but that's neither here nor there. ]
